Getting started with RefWorks

RefWorks is a reference management program that helps you keep track of your references, collaborate with others on group work and add citations to your reports, assignments and research documents.

RefWorks is web-based so once you’ve created an account you can access and share your references from anywhere with an internet connection.

Accessing RefWorks and creating an account

RefWorks is free for staff and students of Victoria University.

You should always access RefWorks from the Library online resources pages. This will give you access to your account when you are off-campus.

To create a new RefWorks account:

  1. Access RefWorks from the Library online resources pages
  2. Create an account by clicking on Sign Up for a New Account
  3. Create a username and password and complete any other required fields
  4. Once this information has been submitted your RefWorks account will be created and you can start creating your personal library of references.

Installing Write-N-Cite and RefGrab-It

Write-N-Cite gives you access to your RefWorks library while you are working in Microsoft Word, allowing you to add citations to your reports, assignments and research documents.

RefGrab-It allows you to capture bibliographic information from web pages and import this into your RefWorks library.

Students will need to install these applications on a home PC or laptop as they are not available on student access computers.

Staff members or researchers wishing to use these applications from an office at Victoria University contact ITS on x5050 to request installation.
