Introduction to the Library's special collections

Key archival resources

The collections contain upwards of 1 kilometre of archival material. Our areas of particular interest are Victoria University's history, the history of student life at Victoria University, New Zealand literature, Trade Union and Labour history, New Zealand printing history, Kelburn and Wellington history. These include:

  • Victoria University Council and Academic Board minutes from 1899 until 20 years ago (courtesy of the University Archive).
  • Victoria University Students Association (and some of its clubs) and New Zealand University Students Association archives.
  • Many items of personal memorabilia from alumni - particularly photographs.
  • Papers of distinguished past academics.
  • New Zealand Literary Archive - papers of Jenny Bornholdt, Alistair Te Ariki Campbell, Patricia Grace and Witi Ihimaera - all alumni of Victoria University.
  • Papers related to trade unions and labour history, including archives of a number of unions and  the papers of James Roberts - a hugely significant figure in New Zealand's trade union history,

The collections are full of many other treasures. Come and ask us.
